Coronavirus deaths in Bristol rise by more than 20 per cent in one week

The coronavirus death toll has increased by more than 20 per cent in Bristol in just one week.

Figures released from NHS England show the number of people who have died at the Southmead Hospital surged by 13 over the last seven days.

While at University Hospitals Bristol Trust, which runs Bristol Royal Infirmary, nine lost their lives after contracting the deadly virus during the same period.

This has brought the city's Covid-19 death toll in both Bristol hospitals to 145, with 75 at North Bristol Trust and 70 at UHB.

According to figures released by Public Health England, as of April 26, 571 people tested positive for the virus in Bristol.

Coronavirus-related deaths across the UK have now peaked at 21,092.

The figures come on the same day Bristol's new Nightingale Hospital opened.

Despite the city's existing hospitals being only half-full, the 300-bed site at the University West of England's Frenchay Campus was opened as health officials 'prepare for the worst'.
