Coronavirus claims further 19 lives in Dumfries and Galloway

A further 19 people have died in Dumfries and Galloway as a result of the coronavirus in the past week.

That's one less than the previous week - which was the highest weekly figure since the pandemic began.

National Records of Scotland figures show the pandemic has now claimed 123 lives in the region, with 43 this year.

Their weekly update comes a day after the UK recorded 100,000 coronavirus deaths.

The NRS data is based on the number of deaths registered where Covid-19 is mentioned on death certificates. 448 deaths fitting that criteria were registered between January 18 and 24 - 74 more than the previous week. It takes the total to 7,902.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s daily update is based on the number of people who died within 28 days of testing positive for coronavirus. By that measure, 5,796 people had died in the pandemic by yesterday.
