Coronavirus claims another event as Strathaven cycle race is cancelled

This year’s Round Strathaven 50 cycle race has been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Organisers made the announcement on Wednesday having “held off as long as possible” to take the decision.

A statement on the popular event’s Facebook page said it would “not be practical” to run this year’s event because of health and safety concerns.

It continued: “Alongside the lack of certainty on whether larger gatherings will be permitted by August, there are also issues regarding availability of marshals and helpers many of whom are older members of our community and also access to toilet facilities.

“We can only apologise for any disappointment, but we wanted to wait as long as possible before making a final decision.”

Due to take place in August, the 50-mile route has become a mainstay of the club cycling calendar.

With more than 2700ft of climbing through some of the great landscapes in the area, it is a real spectacle, with a family friendly 15-mile fun ride also on offer.

The RS50 is also used to raise money for a number of good causes.

Those already registered for the 2020 event will be contacted directly to organise a refund for entry, with organisers working on a contingency challenge to raise money for Kilbryde Hospice and Health Help International

To find out more about that, future events and details of refunds, follow the event on Facebook.com/RoundStrathaven50
