Coronavirus claims 20 more lives in Dumfries and Galloway

The coronavirus has claimed a further 20 lives in Dumfries and Galloway in the last week.

The latest figures from National Records of Scotland show there have now been 24 deaths as a result of the pandemic in 2021.

They compile their figures based on the number of cases where Covid-19 is mentioned on the death certificate. Using that system, there have been 104 deaths in the region since the pandemic began.

In Scotland, there were 368 coronavirus deaths last week – 23 less than the previous week. It takes the total to 7,448.

When First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announces deaths in her daily briefing, that is calculated using the number of people to have died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19.

There had been 5,376 deaths in Scotland by that measure up to yesterday.

The region’s health board has revealed a further four residents have died as a result of a coronavirus outbreak at Stranraer’s Thorney Croft Care Home, taking the figure there to 10.

Forty-five staff and the same number of residents have tested positive for Covid-19.
