Coronavirus cases rise in Bristol as UK records highest daily death toll

The UK has suffered another 1,610 coronavirus deaths in the biggest single-day jump of the pandemic so far (January 19)

Across Bristol and its neighbouring areas a further six people have died.

Three fatalities were in our city, where a further 262 people tested positive for the virus.

Two more people died in South Gloucestershire, where 141 positive lab tests were returned.

And one death was in Bath and North East Somerset. This district confirmed 82 new infections.

Reacting to the figures shadow Health Secretary Jonathan Ashworth tweeted: "Awful. Horrific. Devastating. And it didn't have to be like this."

It has also been confirmed that coronavirus hospital admissions are now at their highest since the pandemic first hit - with 404 Covid inpatients in Bristol's wards.

Half of Bristol cases are among people aged between 30 to 59, as council chiefs confirm cases are increasing due to 'community transmission'.

The breakdown of new cases

The daily rise in cases for each part of the region is recorded below, with the total figure during the pandemic in brackets:

  • Bath and North East Somerset: +82 (6,684)

  • Bristol: +262 (24,498)

  • North Somerset: +100 (8,044)

  • South Gloucestershire: +141 (11,756)

UK cases

Infections have fallen for a fourth consecutive day and are at their lowest point since December 27, when 30,501 infections were announced.

A further 33,355 new cases were recorded today, bringing the total number of positive tests to 3,466,849.
