Coronavirus cases across Bristol region surge by 360 in just 24 hours

Coronavirus cases continue to soar across the whole of the Bristol region, with 360 confirmed over the last 24 hours.

More than half were in Bristol, where a further 195 people were diagnosed with the deadly virus today (October 22).

That brings our city's total to 4,199 - a quarter of those infections were confirmed over the last week.

Figures continue to surge in South Gloucestershire as well, where 76 positive lab tests were returned overnight. This district's total now stands at 1,854 since the first case was confirmed in March.

While Bath and North East Somerset reported a rise of 40 - the total there is 1,185.

And North Somerset recorded 49, its total is 1,854.

The UK's coronavirus death toll has today risen by 189 - with a further 21,242 cases confirmed.

The latest fatalities bring the UK's total number of deaths to 44,347.

University cases

The University of Bristol has confirmed more than 1,100 coronavirus cases so far, latest figures show.

A total of 1,089 students have tested positive for covid-19 now, together with 22 members of staff, taking the total of confirmed cases at the university to 1,111 - a daily rise of 32 positive tests.
