Coronation Street star shows support for Irish homeowners impacted by mica scandal

One of the most recognisable stars of soapland has weighed in on the mica crisis currently affecting thousands of Irish homeowners.

Defective building blocks containing mica have caused cracks and fissures to open in an estimated 5,000 to 6,000 homes, primarily in Mayo and Donegal.

Campaigners are calling for a 100% redress scheme for people affected by mica, with protesters highlighting their plight at the Fianna Fail think-in last week.

One of the former stars of British soap Coronation Street has now joined the chorus of people showing their support for the impacted homeowners.

Charlie Lawson, best known for playing Jim McDonald in the long-running programme, weighed in on the issue on Wednesday.

The Fermanagh actor said on Twitter: "Folks, have a look at the housing crisis…. Literally homes falling down!!

"MICA in Donegal. I was shocked @mariemcdonaldtv @rte. I wish you well in your campaign people."

Dozens of people thanked him for his support and for further bringing their campaign to the fore.

One person said: "Thank you Charlie. You won’t believe it the next time you have a drive around Inishowen and Donegal. We’re heartbroken you’ll see it with your eyes but you’ll feel it in the atmosphere."

A second added: "Thanks Charlie for highlighting this many people in the north affected by it. Travesty what is going on. Thank you."

A third said: "Thanks for highlighting the housing plight in Donegal @charlie_lawson1 total disgrace the way homeowners are being treated #100percentredress no less for #micafamilies."

It comes after UK actress Anna Friel also spoke ut about the mica and pyrite scandal earlier this year.

In June, the Marcella star, who was born in Belfast and raised in Donegal, publicised her support for residents in Mayo and Donegal.

She wrote on Twitter: “Supporting Donegal and Mayo home owners effected by mica & pyrite.”
