Coronation Street's Maureen Lipman made soap's first Dame by Prince Charles

Coronation Street star Maureen Lipman looked to be beaming with pride as she was made a Dame by Prince Charles.

The actress, who plays Tyrone Dobbs' sassy grandmother Evelyn Plummer, was handed the honour today in a ceremony at Windsor Castle.

Looking stylish in a long patterned coat, which she wore over a black dress and teamed with a fancy black fascinator, the 75-year-old smiled as the future King, dressed in a military uniform, officially named her a Dame Commander of the British Empire.

Maureen looked stunning in a pair of bold red heels that picked out the pigment in her coat and a slick of scarlet lipstick.

She's the first actress of the ITV soap to become a Dame thanks to her services to charity, entertainment and the arts throughout her career, which has spanned more than 50 years.

Maureen's career has seen her do everything from Shakespeare on stage at the Bard's home in Stratford-upon-Avon to starring in Oscar-winning movie The Pianist.

She's also had a prolific career on TV, starring in the likes of Doctor Who, The Fugitives, Johnathan Creek and The Wire.

The star actually first appeared in Corrie in 2002, when she portrayed snooty landlady Lillian Spencer in six episodes.

Her character had been employed by Fred Elliott to run the Rovers Return.

Then 16 years later, she returned as Tyrone's long-lost grandmother when he learned the truth about his family history.

Maureen has also worked as a political activist.

Speaking last year when it was announced she'd be made a Dame, Maureen spoke of how her family were welcomed into the UK after fleeing persecution in Russia.

She said: "I am proud to be honoured by the Queen and country that I love, for doing the work that I love."

Maureen met the Queen when she visited the set of Corrie earlier this year.

Her Majesty headed to the cobbles back in July to meet some of the soap's long-serving cast members, such as William Roache and Barbara Knox.

Looking back on the special day, Dame Maureen said on Good Morning Britain: "She was such a geezer, I can’t tell you!

"We were all in love with her, even the most hardened, you know, the guys in the green room saying, 'I’m not putting a jacket on'.

"Because out she popped from a her plum-coloured car and talked to everybody."
