Coronation Street fans baffled as character 'returns from dead' - but it's not as it seems

Coronation Street viewers got the shock of their lives on Wednesday night, when a character appeared to make a return to the Cobbles.

But it was impossible, given the character in question had sadly died in 2006.

Fast-forward 14 years later though, and one character claimed to have seen him and met him on the Cobbles recently.

Gary Windass had to double-take when his colleague Sharon informed him of her meeting with Corrie legend Fred Elliott.

He wasn't the only one, with viewers questioning if they had heard correctly.

Many began taking to Twitter to ask what was going on.

But soon enough the misunderstanding was cleared up, and it was not as it seemed.

Sharon talked of Fred, but in turn described another Weatherfield resident - Adam Barlow.

It turns out, Adam posed as a teacher named Fred Elliott - no doubt inspired by his former neighbour.

Gary was utterly confused, until Sharon mentioned the Scottish man she was talking to.

He very quickly realised, as did she, that it was all an act.

Viewers took to Twitter over the scenes, with many in hysterics over Adam's lies.

One viewer tweeted: "Fred Elliot? Blast from the past!"

Another said: "Did she say Fred Ellliot?"

A third added: "Fred Elliot ? He died years ago."

Meanwhile a fourth commented: "Fred Elliott, I say Fred Elliott."

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30pm on ITV.
