Coronation Street confirms iconic character's death as family rush to their bedside

Coronation Street have confirmed Bill Webster had died with his son Kevin Webster by his side.

It was confirmed during tonight's episode that Bill - who was played by Peter Armitage - had passed away with his family by his side. Tonight, multiple residents of Weatherfield had it confirmed to them that Bill had passed away.

During a scene with Abi, Kevin's sister Debbie confirmed that Bill had died but it was a "peaceful" passing. She said she'd be there to support Kevin with the funeral arrangements and had planned to fly back out there.

Clearly concerned by her decision to come back, Debbie told Abi: "I should have stayed out there."

Abi then tried to reassure her, telling her: "You didn't know [he was going to pass], and at least you got to see him!" Kevin didn't appear in the episode, but Abi mentioned he was doing well despite what had happened.

Peter Armitage appeared in Coronation Street multiple times during the 1980s and into the 2010s. He was most recently in the soap back in 2011, when his character suffered a heart attack on screen.

The actor passed away back in 2018, with ITV paying tribute to Peter.

"Peter was a much respected and much loved member of the Coronation Street family. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time," they shared in a statement at the time as they marked Peter's passing.

At the time, multiple fellow Corrie stars paid tribute to Peter.

Charlie Lawson - who played Jim McDonald - said at the time: "It’s with great sadness, that I’ve to tell you my great old friend Pete Armitage has died. RIP mate," whilst Simon Gregson wrote: "I loved Pete what a lovely man very sad RIP lovely man."

Jane Danson, who played Leanne Battersby, added: "So sorry to hear this, lovely man . Thoughts to family and friends."

Peter was also known for starring in the 1980s Yellow Pages commercial, and also counted The Befrienders, Couples, Jack the Ripper and Hearts and Minds amongst his TV credits.
