Cops issue warning to parents using 'dangerous' dual carriageway as school drop-off

Police have issued a stark warning to senseless parents using a "dangerous" Lanarkshire dual carriageway as a school drop-off.

Officers have received complaints about drivers using the slowing/stopped traffic on the A725 Kingsway in East Kilbride to drop children off at nearby schools - mainly Halfmerke Primary.

A police statement issued today read: "Please remember that the A725 is a fast moving dual carriage way and slowing/stopping to allow passengers to exit vehicles can be very dangerous - even if the traffic is at a halt.

"When dropping children at school, please use designated parking bays at the school premises or drop-off children where it is safe to do so."

Police Scotland said that community police will be out patrolling in the area over the next few days.

Sergeant Scott Anderson told Lanarkshire Live : “Road safety remains a priority for police, we will be in the Kingsway area to monitor driver behaviour, and liaise with partner agencies and the local schools to educate parents."

South Lanarkshire Council urged parents to use "common sense" to ensure their children's safety.

A council spokesperson said: "We strongly urge all parents to heed police traffic advice and use appropriate places to drop off their children.

"We welcome the community police patrols that will be operating in the area in the coming days to help reinforce that common sense is essential for ensuring children’s safety going to and from school."
