Cooper Kupp on pace to break Calvin Johnson’s receiving record – by 1 yard

Cooper Kupp’s hot start to the 2021 season has been a pleasant surprise for the Rams, quickly building chemistry with Matthew Stafford on offense. Through seven weeks, Kupp leads the league in targets, receptions, receiving yards and touchdown catches, putting up huge numbers thus far.

He’s caught 56 passes for 809 yards and nine touchdowns already, putting him on a torrid pace the rest of the way. In fact, he’s on track to break one of the most notable receiving records in the NFL.

Currently, Kupp is averaging 115.6 yards per game. If he maintains that for the entire 17-game season, he would finish the year with 1,965 yards receiving.

Calvin Johnson holds the single-season receiving record with 1,964 yards, set in 2012. At his current pace, Kupp would edge Johnson out by 1 yard.

One. Single. Yard.

And what’s even harder to believe is that Matthew Stafford was Johnson’s quarterback in 2012 and is now throwing passes to Kupp, so he could potentially be the quarterback from two of the best receiving seasons in NFL history.

It almost feels destined for Kupp to break Johnson’s record, though averaging 116 yards per week the rest of the way won’t be easy.
