"Considerable damage" to North Lanarkshire Council HQ ahead of Budget

North Lanarkshire Council’s headquarters in Motherwell was thrashed just two days before councillors were due to vote on its Budget.

Police confirmed two men had been arrested following “considerable damage” to the offices on three floors of the local authority’s HQ in Windmillhill Street.

“Two men aged 20 and 21 years have been arrested and charged in connection with damage caused inside a building in Windmillhill Street, Motherwell on Saturday, February 22.

“They are due before Hamilton Sheriff Court today (Monday) and a full report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”

Councillors are meeting in the Civic Centre to vote through its Budget with around £31 million worth of cuts due to be rubber stamped.

A spokesperson for North Lanarkshire Council said: “The Civic Centre was broken into on Saturday morning and there was considerable damage to the offices on the ground, first and second floors and also to the Civic Chamber.

“We are grateful to everyone who worked so hard over the weekend to ensure the offices could open on Monday and to the Police for their support.”
