The CDD was founded in 2001 and is a higher education institution with a unique structure. It's made up of eight schools around the country - all of them small and all of them specialist providers of education and training in different areas of performance. The constituent schools are: Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, the Central School of Ballet, The Circus Space, London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, London Contemporary Dance School, the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. The CDD doesn't have its own degree-awarding powers, so degrees are validated by different universities.
