Conor McGregor mocked for not having won a fight "since the 90s" ahead of comeback

Conor McGregor has been mocked for not having won a UFC fight "since the 90's" with his comeback planned for later this year.

The Irishman is yet to make an appearance in the octagon since July when he suffered a broken leg in an opening round defeat to Dustin Poirier.

He has suffered three defeats in his last four outings which also includes a defeat to Russian rival Khabib Nurmagomedov in an illustrious clash back in 2018.

MMA manager Ali Abdelaziz has taken to Twitter to mock McGregor in a conversation with Usman Nurmagomedov and Brian Kelleher, tweeting: "Brian, this guy has not won a fight since the 90’s, you a lot better than him.

"This guy get beat up inside the cage and outside the cage."

McGregor's teammate Kelleher will face Nurmagomedov's cousin Usman in a hotly-anticipated clash at UFC 272.

Kelleher has previously emphasised his plans for McGregor to corner him for the clash in a rivalry reignited between the Nurmagomedov's and McGregor.

McGregor and Nurmagomedov continue to trade verbal jabs over their fiery 2018 encounter which ended in a mass brawl between both teams.

The Irishman is yet to respond to the offer from Kelleher who believes it will give him a chance of derailing the young Nurmagomedov's career in just his second UFC outing.

He is currently focused on his own comeback from injury and is holidaying in the Bahamas with his family as his break from action continues.

The 33-year-old has seen his decline noticed by many inside the sport having slid to ninth position in the lightweight rankings.

Several options continue to crop up for McGregor including a trilogy with Nate Diaz but the American has since ruled out a third meeting.

McGregor's previous trilogy rival Poirier has also ruled out a fourth clash but previously suggested he would be willing to stage an event in the boxing ring.

The Irishman himself suggested he would look to make a return to sparring and full-contact training in April with a view to a summer comeback clash.

However his manager Tim Simpson believes a summer return could be unrealistic and has backed his charge to challenge for the title.

“Really that’s on Conor [when to return], but I expect this year," Simpson told the MMA Hour. "He is in the Bahamas with his family right now and is focusing on other business ventures.

“He doesn’t need to come back, the fact he is who he is and what he has achieved financially and athletically. After that injury it was like ‘now might be the time’ but he wants to fight again which to me is baffling and says a lot about him.

“I don’t think it will be in the summer but it will definitely be some stage this year. Maybe we see when the lightweight title fight happens and go then.

"He will fight this year and it is a credit to him, he has no real reason to fight other than the fact he wants to and that is impressive."
