Conor McGregor has issued an update on the horrific injury that he suffered during his UFC return against Max Holloway.
‘The Notorious’ returned to the Octagon after five years away, having broken his leg against Dustin Poirier in July 2021.
He made his comeback at the T-Mobile Arena to rematch Holloway on UFC 329, but he was defeated by TKO in Las Vegas, Nevada, after injuring himself inside the first 69 seconds.
It looked as though the Irishman had done some serious damage to his leg, as he looked to be aggressive in the opening exchanges with his feet.
He struggled to land those flying kicks, crashing to the canvas each time, encouraging Holloway to rain punches down onto him.
The 38-year-old has since called for his rematch with Holloway - following his first victory over the American back in 2013 - to be ruled a no-contest as a result of his injury.
13 years ago, in their first bout, McGregor incidentally suffered the same injury he did this summer, rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), but in the other leg.
In the first fight, the Irishman battled through the pain to claim a unanimous decision win.
This time, however, he suffered the same injury, and then some, as he revealed on social media.
Update: It was acl and meniscus. It is the same injury as the first Holloway fight, only this time the opposite leg. Quite shocking. “It was ACL and meniscus,” McGregor wrote in a post.
“It is the same injury as the first Holloway fight, only this time the opposite leg. Quite shocking. I returned to competition within 9 months to fight Diego Brandao back then. With today’s regenerative medicine advancements and improved training methods it is well within my realm to return by next summer. I am walking without a crutch. I [have] done leg extension machine work the other day to no issue. So I can walk without aid, and activate my quad under resistance.
“All very positive. I am maximum discipline and have maintained it fully since the bout. I wonder was I saved from something worse here. I believe so. I would have attended the after party as “the man” and who knows then. I believe I was saved. Thank you God! On we go, no sad stories. Thank you for the support and well wishes everyone, your health is your wealth.”
