ALABAMA - The busy January calendar continues in world soccer with more cup competitions around Europe. After last week's Supercopa de España celebrations, the Copa del Rey's Round of 16 is upon us with a stellar matchup between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid, who just faced each other last week in a thrilling match that ended in a 5-3 victory for Carlo Ancelotti's side.
And just like with the Supercopa de España, Saudi Arabia will serve as hosts for this year's Italian Supercoppa involving Inter Milan, Lazio, Napoli and Fiorentina. They will decide this year's champion next Monday, Jan. 22, in what will be the first time since 2019 that the competition is played outside of Italy.
The USMNT is also back in action this week when they face Slovenia in a friendly at San Antonio, Texas. It is not an international break, so players from Europe will not be called up for this game. On the other hand, 17 uncapped players have been called up, with 15 of them making their first-ever appearance at a USMNT camp. Gregg Berhalter's men will face Slovenia on Saturday, Jan. 20. The game will be broadcast by TNT, Telemundo, NBC Universo, MAX and Peacock, as well as a Spanish-language audio available on Fútbol de Primera radio.
The matchup between Tigres and Chivas is Liga MX's game of the week. Tigres is currently on a three-game unbeaten streak against the 'Rebaño' (2-0-1), including a 4-0 win in the regular season last tournament. Out of their last seven clashes, Chivas has only been able to come out triumphant once, in a 2-1 win at Estadio Universitario last February.
Also this week, the CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic tournament kicks off in Venezuela. Only two South American nations will be able to qualify to the Paris 2024 games. Out of the last five gold medals in soccer at the Olympics, all of them were won by Latin American countries (Argentina: 2004-08, Mexico: 2012, Brazil: 2016-20).
