Conference club slam West of Scotland League and pull out after being 'harshly penalised' with travel

Ayshire side Dalry Thistle have blasted the West of Scotland League and pulled out of the set-up for being forced to travel to clubs across Lanarkshire.

In the redrawn Conference C in tier seven the Merksworth Park men would be facing off against the likes of Thorniewood, Lanark, Kilsyth Rangers, Newmains and East Kilbride Thistle.

Newmains had been scheduled to face Dalry on the opening day of the season last weekend but the game was axed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Kilsyth Rangers were to host the side this weekend but the game will now be axed.

It's a major blow for the WOSL as Darly become the first club to withdraw from the set-up since the season kicked off.

In a scathing club statement, the Jags dubbed the financial pressures put on them by travel was "a step too far."

"After consideration, the misjudgement of the league committee to draw our club into a league travelling a minimum of 35 minutes to one hour and 15 minutes every second week without changing facilities has forced us to withdraw from this seasons WOSFL.

"The additional cost of such travel on top of the financial pressures already involved is a step too far, along with players travelling home such distances without a shower means we have no other option.

"There has been no consideration for our circumstances and being the only Ayrshire side in the league we feel very harshly penalised.

"The club wanted to continue but all reasons stated above have forced our withdrawal.

"With the common sense government guidelines of keeping travel to a minimum and restricting mixing different areas of the country we find it irresponsible to commit to a league which would compromise the health of our players, staff and the community of Dalry."
