Sterilization is a permanent method of birth control that can be opted for by men or women. Sterilization in men is called "Vasectomy" and this process involves preventing the sperms from reaching the semen by cutting and sealing the tubes which carry the sperms . Women are known to undergo sterilization via Tubal ligation, commonly known as" having their tubes tied". During this procedure, blocking the fallopian tubes is done ,which prevents the egg from meeting the sperm for fertilization.
Sterilization is done to prevent pregnancy without the need for daily contraception. It offers couples peace of mind and can be an empowering choice for those who have completed their desired family size or are looking for a more permanent birth control option. However, as compared to women, the willingness of men to undergo sterilisation is shockingly low, even though a Vasectomy can be done under local anaesthesia and has a quicker recovery time than a tubal ligation.
Why men don't choose to undergo sterilization easily?
Societal expectation that women should take on the responsibility of contraception is prevalent. Men might feel pressurised by gender roles and fear being perceived as weak if they opt for sterilization.
There is a significantly low amount of awareness and education when it comes to sterilization, with emphasis mainly given to female methods. Men may not be aware of the benefits of the procedure and hence, don’t undergo it.
There is even a misconception that vasectomy is an intricate and irreversible procedure, owing to which men hesitate in making this decision. They also feel that vasectomy can lead to complications and a reduced quality of life. This also prevents them from opting for this procedure.
Some men may also have concerns about complications or changes in sexual function post-sterilization. This also prevents men from opting for vasectomy.
It is the need of the hour to educate men about sterilization through awareness campaigns and drives. Sterilization is beneficial for both men and women. By choosing sterilization, both men and women can make informed decisions about their reproductive health.
