Community Rescue Service fundraiser to secure funds for broken equipment

A charity rave is being held in North Belfast tonight to raise funds for the Community Rescue Service to help buy vital equipment.

The charity is in need of £28,000 to purchase components of a £40,000 sonar system that was damaged during a call out.

Orgainsed by former volunteer Steve Maitland, the event is being held in the Chester Live Lounge on the Antrim Road .

Steve, 35, who hails from the Cliftonville area, said: "I used to be in the C.R.S Belfast team. I am a family friend of Joby Murphy who sadly fell into the Lagan and died a few years back and his death inspired me to join.

"His body was found after equipment from Cork was brought up and after that his family raised the money for Northern Ireland's first sonar device.

"Unfortunately I had to leave the CRS due to the stress that comes with searching for bodies but I still help them with fund raising from time to time and now after finding out that they lost their sonar device I have decided to run this event to help them raise money again for a new one."

The volunteer rescue service lost part of their sonar equipment during a dramatic call out in July 2018.

Crew onboard the Community Rescue Service boat had just seconds to spare when they were called to reports of a person in difficulty in the River Foyle .

But with 80 metres of fibre-optic cable already in the water as part of an unrelated search operation, there was no choice but to cut it loose.

Now the people of North Belfast are rallying around to help secure the funds needed to repair the cable. Eight local Djs will perform, poignantly including Danny Cullen, the brother of Michael Cullen, whose body was recovered by the Community Rescue Service from the Cavehill in January 2018.

Steve added: "Everyone has been great, the Chester have given us the room for free and all of the DJs have agreed to play for free so all proceeds will be going straight to the CRS.

"It should be a good night, we have eight different Djs playing including Danny Cullen, the brother of Michael Cullen, whose body was found by the CRS, during a search on the Cavehill last year.

"We are really looking forward to it, I have been planning it since before Christmas and I am thankful to everyone who has got involved to make it happen.

"I hope the people of Belfast get behind us and come out tonight."

The event will start at 7pm and last until 1am. Tickets are £5 at the door and all proceeds will go to the Community Rescue Service.
