Community council in West Lothian ask local residents for help tracing fly-tipping culprits

A community council in West Lothian is urging locals to help identify the culprits behind a fly-tipping incident.

A spokesperson from the Pumpherston Community Council hit out online after a huge illegal load was dumped near the local golf club at the weekend.

Tyres and wooden pallets were among the items and the community council believe this could identify those responsible.

The message said: “Rubbish would suggest a garage, either private or commercial. Are you aware of any business that’s just had a clean up?

“Have you just cleaned your premises, and not checked SEPA credentials before awarding the disposal job?

“This is a kick in the teeth to our community, and all the volunteers who selflessly give their time to picking up litter day-in-day out - it’s disgusting!”

West Lothian Council say the land is not public but they are working to try and identify the owner and also asked local residents for their help.

A West Lothian Council spokesperson said: “There’s simply no excuse for fly-tipping, which is a selfish act that spoils our shared environment. The vast majority of West Lothian residents wouldn’t dream of fly-tipping, with only a small minority responsible for blighting our area.

“The majority of fly-tipping is commercial in nature, so we would ask local residents to check that anyone doing work for them has a valid waste carrier license from SEPA. Tradespeople and householders both legally responsible for ensuring that they dispose of their waste items legally and safety, as dumping waste is illegal and can lead to a prosecution and a fine of up to £40,000.

“The large volume of tyres suggests that a garage may responsible for this, and anyone with information on those responsible can contact us in confidence via 01506 280000 or www.westlothian.gov.uk/contactus.

“Anyone who spots fly-tipping can report it to us at www.westlothian.gov.uk/article/32089/Report-Illegal-Fly-Tipping. We will clear fly-tipping on public land, and try and contact the landowner if it is on private land.

“Our five recycling centres are currently open 7 days from 10am to 6pm to allow West Lothian residents to dispose of household waste responsibly. More details of locations and opening hours can be found at https://www.westlothian.gov.uk/local-recycling-centres.”
