Commanders lose rookie DT Phidarian Mathis for the season

The Washington Commanders picked up a win on Sunday to begin the season with a 1-0 record. However, the Commanders suffered a difficult loss in the win.

Rookie defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis, who was carted off the field in the first half, has been diagnosed with a torn meniscus and is out for the remainder of the season, per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Head coach Ron Rivera expressed concern regarding Mathis after Sunday’s game and said Monday that Mathis would be getting an MRI.

Losing Mathis creates a big hole in Washington’s defensive tackle depth behind Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne. Allen is also scheduled for an MRI, although his groin injury isn’t thought to be serious.

Rivera confirmed the Commanders would be looking for help at defensive tackle.

“Going forward, we most certainly are looking at an opportunity to bring in at least one defensive tackle that we may put on the 53 and another defensive tackle we may put on practice squad,” Rivera said. “I mean, these are all options that we have to have. There’s several names that we’re looking at, young names, young guys, guys that we think have opportunities to come in and help.”
