'Come on' - Thiago Alcantara explains reason behind 'big' Liverpool transfer decision

Thiago Alcantara says Liverpool was the perfect club for him after moving from Bayern Munich.

The Spaniard is nearing a milestone at Anfield as he edges closer to a century of appearances after joining Jurgen Klopp's side in 2020.

Although he couldn't help Liverpool to league and European glory in his third season in England, he did add domestic honours in the form of Carabao Cup and FA Cup winners' medals - despite being forced off in the warm-up in the former of those finals.

Thiago made 235 appearances for Bundesliga giants Munich, including 150 in the German top flight, winning league seven titles, a Champions League and numerous domestic honours in Bavaria.

His move to Merseyside came as a surprising one. And the 31-year-old has admitted what caused the decision.

"For sure it was a big decision, the German league is awesome but we were winning for eight years in a row but come on, we need something more challenging and the biggest one in that moment was Premier League," Thiago said speaking to BT Sport.

"Which other teams were more iconic in the Premier League? Which one is a better project, better coach and Liverpool was perfect for that. It was a match from the first day."

Reds boss Klopp expressed his delight at the signing in 2020. He said: "Absolutely great. I'm really happy that it finally worked out and we could just do it.

"I know all the people at Bayern wanted to keep him desperately. That's normal and understandable because he played an important role, in the last season as well.

"He just was ready for a new challenge and he decided for us."
