Colts waive QB Chad Kelly

The Indianapolis Colts waived quarterback Chad Kelly following the conclusion of his two-game suspension, the team announced Wednesday.

The third-year quarterback shined during the preseason but with Jacoby Brissett instilled as the starter and Brian Hoyer backing him up, the Colts likely don’t want to carry three quarterbacks on the active roster.

This likely isn’t the end for Kelly, though. With the Colts waiving Kelly, it is likely they are hoping he passes through waivers so they can sign him to the practice squad.

After signing with the Colts during the offseason, Kelly beat out Phillip Walker for the QB3 competition. During the preseason, Kelly completed 54 of 74 pass attempts (74%) while throwing for 583 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions and a 94.7 passer rating. He also took 10 carries for 107 yards and two rushing touchdowns.

It isn’t clear if the Colts will be able to sign Kelly to the practice squad following waivers, but that is likely the plan if possible.
