Colts’ updated salary-cap space after early free agency moves

While things were quiet to begin the legal tampering period to open the week, the Indianapolis Colts eventually got it going and made some moves as the new league year commenced on Wednesday.

The big move came in the form of trading for defensive end Yannick Ngakoue. He has the biggest salary-cap hit of all the moves made thus far at $13 million.

The Colts also signed cornerback Brandon Facyson to a one-year deal while re-signing tight end Mo Alie-Cox, linebacker Zaire Franklin, defensive lineman Tyquan Lewis and offensive lineman Matt Pryor.

With all of those moves, we have an updated look at the salary-cap space the Colts are working with. According to Over The Cap, the Colts still lead the league as of this writing.

Accounting for all of those moves, the Colts still sit with $39.85 million in salary-cap space. That’s still more than what they had before the Carson Wentz trade. The second-closest team in salary-cap space are the Carolina Panthers at $34.7 million.

The Colts still have several needs to address and the quarterback position will be the biggest one. That position will likely have the biggest impact on the salary cap depending on which option the team goes with.

The Colts also have to find a left tackle, cornerback depth and wide receiver help. All of that will be costly, but they have plenty of space to make deals work.

The league appears to be waiting on the Deshaun Watson domino to fall, which is why the news hasn’t been as abundant, but the Colts will have plenty of resources to get to work after that happens.
