Colts’ training camp preview: DT Sterling Shippy

We continue our look at the training camp previews for the Indianapolis Colts interior defensive line, highlighting one of the undrafted free agents to join the unit this offseason.

Name: Sterling Shippy
Position: DT
Height: 5-foot-11
Weight: 283
Age: 23
Year Drafted: 2019 (UDFA)

Background

Arriving to Indianapolis as an undrafted free agent following the 2019 NFL Draft, Shippy was one of the four players to sign a deal with the Colts following a strong showing at the team’s rookie minicamp.

Coming from Alcorn State, Shippy started 12 of 13 games in 2018, recording 38 tackles (19 solo) and eight sacks.

2019 Outlook

Though he’s shorter than expected for an NFL defensive tackle, Shippy is built like a tank and has shown the ability to combine strength and explosiveness off the line.

He’s athletic and strong with the ability to use those strengths in the Colts’ attacking front. Shippy is likely competing for one of the final spots on the roster and in the defensive line room with guys like Caraun Reid and Jihad Ward.

Bottom Line

The Alcorn State product lacks height but makes up for it with strength, explosiveness and athleticism. He should be competing for one of the final spots on the interior and even if he doesn’t make the initial cut, there’s likely room on the practice squad for Shippy.
