Colts’ Malik Hooker (knee) not expected to hit IR

The Indianapolis Colts got some tough news Monday when it was revealed that safety Malik Hooker suffered a torn meniscus during the 27-24 win against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 3.

The third-year safety suffered the injury during the matchup and while he wound up finishing the game, he will be out an expected timeframe of four to six weeks. However, there doesn’t seem to be any indication that the Colts will be placing Hooker on the injured reserve list, head coach Frank Reich told reporters Monday.

Hooker’s absence will be a big blow to the Colts defense—a unit that is already dealing with injuries to linebacker Darius Leonard and defensive end Jabaal Sheard.

In Hooker’s absence, rookie Khari Willis will be the one to step into a starting role opposite Clayton Geathers. The fourth-round pick has been playing well to begin his career and should have plenty of opportunities to show his growth as Hooker works his way back from the knee injury.

Cornerback Quincy Wilson and safety George Odum can also likely be expected to see some increased playing time with Hooker out.

Hooker has 10 tackles (eight solo) and one interception through the team’s first three games.

The 23-year-old will be missing some time recovering from the torn meniscus, but there appear to be no plans to place him on the injured reserve list.
