Colts listed as potential landing spot for CB Eli Apple

With training camp just a few weeks away, the Indianapolis Colts may be looking to add some depth to the cornerback room entering the 2023 season.

Following the release of expected starter Isaiah Rodgers Sr., who was suspended for gambling violations, the Colts have even more question marks surrounding the cornerback position.

So when Bleacher Report listed potential landing spots for the top free agents, the Colts were among the teams for Eli Apple.

Between 2021 and 2022, Apple took on a prominent role with a playoff-caliber Cincinnati Bengals squad, recording 18 pass breakups and two interceptions. Last year, he allowed a 57 percent completion rate but gave up one too many big plays over the top, surrendering 14.6 yards per completion.

To get the best out of Apple, a team may need to provide deep-safety help to prevent wideouts from racking up yards on deep receptions toward the boundary. Nonetheless, the veteran cornerback can be a serviceable asset if he keeps the action in front of him.

Colts safety Julian Blackmon has allowed a 106.6 passer rating in all three of his seasons, which makes him a questionable fit with Apple. Still, Indianapolis badly needs a veteran cornerback after they released Isaiah Rodgers, whom the league suspended for a year because of a gambling violation.

We listed Apple as a potential free-agent replacement for Rodgers Sr. following the news of his release. It’s not necessarily an exciting pairing, but the Colts need to add experience to the room.

Apple is far from a perfect product, and he’s had his share of lapses in coverage, but he has starting experience, which is something the Colts need in the cornerback room.
