The Indianapolis Colts might have one of the most secure quarterback rooms in the league entering this offseason with part of the reason coming on the shoulders of backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett.
The Colts have expressed their immense faith in Brissett as the backup to Andrew Luck, especially given the former’s starting history in 2017 and the respect he’s garnered in the locker room.
Despite being a potential trade target for other quarterback-needy teams, general manager Chris Ballard said Wednesday at the NFL Combine that he hasn’t received any trade calls for Brissett yet this offseason.
Ballard has constantly expressed how much he and head coach Frank Reich value Brissett as the backup and potential starter should anything happen to Luck.
Ballard echoed his mantra that he must be wowed by an offer from another team. He hasn’t exactly put an exact price on what he would trade Brissett for, but given his statements, it would likely be a relatively high draft pick.
A third-round pick with the New England Patriots in the 2016 NFL Draft, Brissett’s rookie contract expires following the 2019 season. Given that the Colts could eventually lose him in free agency without any compensation, it makes sense why the trade talks are a hot topic.
Both Ballard and Reich have said they believe Brissett is a top-20 quarterback in the league. Though, it remains to be seen if other teams feel that way.
Things can change over the course of the offseason, but it seems for now Brissett will continue to be a high-valued backup for the Colts during the final season of his rookie contract.
