Colts’ Frank Reich: ‘I had a lot to learn’ during rookie season

Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich made the job look easy during his rookie season, but even he had to partake in a learning curve to get used to the rigors of a brand new role.

Though it appears Reich was born to be a head coach in the NFL, it didn’t get off to a hot start as the Colts lost five of their first six games during the 2018 season. He rallied the troops, though, leading Indy to a playoff berth for the first time since 2014.

He reflected a bit on his first season during the final week of OTAs.

“I just think that I had a lot to learn. I had a lot to learn, but it’s fun learning. And it’s fun learning and growing when you’re with good people,” Reich told reporters this week. “I’m not afraid to make mistakes. I made my share of mistakes and I will continue to make mistakes. That’s just part of the process of learning.”

The Colts started 1-5 and wound up making the playoffs as a wild-card team, becoming the second team in NFL history to accomplish such a feat.

His arc is far from finished, though. Reich wants to keep getting better, and he will continue to look for ways to do so entering his second season as the head coach.

“I just think like our players, as coaches and myself included – every aspect of my game of the way that I coach I just want to find ways to get better,” Reich said. “So, (I) just want to maintain that aggressive mindset, a fearless mindset and maintain a growth mindset. So from that perspective, I just feel like I’ve got a long way to go.”

The Colts certainly have the right man for the job in terms of a future outlook. Reich will continue to look for improvements in his coaching, which is something the league might not want to hear following his successful rookie campaign.
