Colts’ Frank Reich gives update on WR Parris Campbell

Indianapolis Colts rookie wide receiver Parris Campbell has been off the field since the first week of training camp nursing a lingering hamstring injury.

Campbell, who missed the majority of training camp in addition to the team’s first two preseason games, was close to returning before suffering a setback with the hamstring injury.

His timetable for return is still unclear, but head coach Frank Reich told reporters Tuesday that the Ohio State product is making some progress.

“Yeah, as far as when you’re looking at if you are checking off steps, he checked off another step yesterday I think it was,” Reich said.

When asked if Campbell would potentially practice this week, Reich wasn’t ready to give a definitive answer.

“Probably not ready to make that declaration yet,” Reich said. “Probably not, but I don’t know if we are ready to rule him out for this week.”

Campbell figures to compete for a solid role in the offense. He should have a role working mostly from the slot—like he did in college—while also seeing some work on the outside as well.

Campbell was having a strong training camp before suffering the hamstring injury. With his status uncertain for the start of the season, it is likely the Colts ease him into action when he returns.

There is a lot of excitement surrounding the second-round pick, but it won’t matter much as long as he’s dealing with an injury. His timetable is still unclear, but it does seem as though some progress is being made.
