Colts’ Darius Leonard (ankle) makes training camp debut

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Darius Leonard made his training camp debut on Tuesday at the Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield.

The two-time All-Pro underwent an ankle procedure in June following the spring workouts to clean up an issue in his ankle. He wound up missing the first half of training camp as he recovered but made his camp debut on Tuesday after the team’s first 10 practices.

Leonard might have a bit more pep in his step after signing a massive contract extension that made him the highest-paid linebacker in the league. His five-year, $99.25 million deal has him tied to the team through the 2026 season.

While Leonard has been out, it has been third-year linebacker E.J. Speed filling in at the WILL spot. Speed will now move over the SAM position and battle with special teams captain Zaire Franklin.

It’s big getting Leonard back on the field. How much he will play during the preseason remains to be seen, but the Colts need his juice in the middle of the defense.
