Colts’ Anthony Castonzo discusses potential contract extension

The Indianapolis Colts showed this offseason they aren’t afraid to give a player an extension on a contract if it is deemed worthy—even if that player’s current deal isn’t nearing its end.

Among the players that could potentially see a contract extension in the near future includes left tackle Anthony Castonzo, who enters the final season of his current contract.

Though he said earlier in the offseason an extension really isn’t on his mind, he discussed his thoughts on a new deal with 1070 The Fan over the weekend, per Kevin Bowen.

“That would be great. Obviously, anytime you can be under contract and feeling good about it, that’s always good. I have confidence. Basically, I just have to get stuff done on the field and everything else will kind of take care of itself,” Castonzo said. “That’s the mindset I’m in. Like you said, I’m 30. I’m not going into my second contract where I’m super freaking out about, ‘I have to make sure I play or else this, or else that.’ I’m just going to go out there and play the game like I always do and everything else will just take care of itself. That’s the way I see it.”

Even at the age of 30, Castonzo showed in 2018 that he can still be an above-average starter on the blindside in both run blocking and pass protection.

The film showed that his strength is still there as is his technique for the majority of his snaps. His kick-step is still quick enough to get depth against most pass rushers—though he did show struggles against speed rushers running the arc.

The Colts have been trying to get younger for years, but having a solid veteran presence at an invaluable position can’t be overstated. Castonzo more than gets the job done.

It will be a development to keep an eye on throughout the season, but an extension wouldn’t at all be surprising for the veteran leader of the offensive line.
