Colts add WR Denzel Mims, QB Jalen Hurts in Draft Wire projections

Day 2 of the 2020 NFL draft is finally upon us, and the Indianapolis Colts figure to be very busy during the second round. There is a lot of value to be had after the first day of the draft concluded.

There is a high possibility the Colts trade out of the No. 34 spot, which is reportedly already being discussed among potential suitors. A trade back should be highly expected at this point in the draft.

In Draft Wire’s updated projections for Day 2, the Colts stay put and add one of the top wide receivers in the draft while also bringing in a quarterback prospect into the room. Here’s a look at the updated projections:

  • No. 34: WR Denzel Mims, Baylor
  • No. 44: QB Jalen Hurts, Oklahoma
  • No. 75: EDGE Jonathan Greenard, Florida

Adding Mims to the wide receiver room is hugely tempting, and he’s likely one of the few prospects who would keep the Colts from trading out of the No. 34 pick.

Mims would instantly compete for the WR2 role opposite T.Y. Hilton while working on the boundary as he X-receiver. He has the chance to be a WR1 once he begins to develop his game.

With Philip Rivers under center, the Colts still need to add to the quarterback room. Hurts is an intriguing project, but he’s far from complete. His leadership and mentality are perfect for the position, but there is a lot of development that must take place as a passer.

Adding to the edge with Greenard, the Colts would be getting a pass rusher with some juice and one who would fill into the rotation as a sub-package rusher upon arrival. There is plenty of upside with Greenard if he can develop his plan as a pass rusher.
