A college graduate holding his infant son in his arms during a commencement ceremony at the University at Buffalo was chased by security officers across the stage in a viral moment that sparked both cheers and controversy.

On May 18, Jean Paul Al Arab crossed the graduation stage with his young son, who was dressed in matching regalia, during the College of Arts and Sciences commencement, according to Fox 13 Now.

I’m a full-time student, working two jobs—one of them overnight—and taking care of my son during the day until his mom gets home from work. And here I am, graduating, with my boy by my side. WE DID IT! #ub #comencement #baby #graduation

Al Arab had previously asked for permission to include his son and was told it was acceptable. However, when the moment arrived, university staff attempted to stop him, citing safety rules and commencement guidelines.

In footage that quickly gained traction on social media, Al Arab is seen running past event staff and a pursuing officer to make it to the stage with his child, dropping his graduation cap in the process. He shook hands with faculty, raised his fist triumphantly, and received applause from the audience.

Al Arab later clarified on TikTok that he acted out of frustration after being told his son could no longer join him, despite previous assurances. "I promised him I was going to walk with him on stage," he said. "And I ran. That's what I did."

The University at Buffalo confirmed in a statement that Al Arab had violated official ceremony rules prohibiting non-graduates from participating, but stated he would still receive his degree and face no disciplinary action. The university also clarified that police were not "called" specifically for the incident, but were already present for general event security.
