Cold snap expected to hit Renfrewshire this week as temperatures plummet

The end of Renfrewshire's sunny spell looks set to be near, with bookies slashing odds on winter spells.

Despite a record warm March spell, all good things must come to an end.

A cold spell is forecast to return this week, with bookmakers Coral cutting odds on next month being the coldest April on record in the UK.

Met Office specialists have also predicted a change in the weather, with predictions that the area will face: "A cold end to the week with bright or clear spells and occasional wintry showers", alongside "widespread overnight frosts".

But snow over high ground is expected as early as tonight, with tomorrow (Wednesday) forecast for rain and hill snow to clear quickly, leaving: "a bright day with occasional sunny spells and a scattering of wintry showers."

Cold winds are also expected, with maximum temperatures only looking at pushing the mercury up to around seven degrees.

The longer range prediction up til April 11 finds: "High pressure to the west of the UK and Ireland " bringing northerly winds and an expected "cold start to the period".

Met Office forecasters also say: "bands of wintry showers most frequent over northern and eastern areas" are due, although showers are also likely inland and could be heavy at times.

But temperatures are expected to head back towards average after the early April showers bring the cold snap.

The news means Coral have slashed odds to 6-4 from 3-1 on next month being the coldest April on UK record and the firm makes it evens for a White Easter - which requires snow to fall on any major UK city during Easter weekend.

Coral's John Hill said: "We are set for a chilly start to the new month. With temperatures forecast to plummet below freezing point again, we have slashed the odds on it ending as a record cold April.
"Hopefully things improve by the time the Easter weekend comes around, however, we now make it just evens for a White Easter this year."
