COIMBATORE: For a post of sanitary worker with the district health department, which requires a qualification of Class VIII pass, two graduates and a homemaker are among the applicants. The health department conducted a direct interview at its Race Course office on Thursday for more than 10 people to fill the post that pays 8,500 per month.
P Ranjith, 26, a BCom graduate, who attended the interview, told TOI, "I work in the admin section of an IT company. But my job is not secure as I could be laid off any time the management faces a financial crunch. So I wanted to join a government job."
When asked if he could work as a sanitary worker, Ranjith answered in affirmative and said every job has its own worth and dignity.
A 24-year-old man, who received a diploma in paramedical, also tried his luck by throwing his hat in the ring.
Meanwhile, C Shobana, 30, a mother of two children also attended the interview. "I am sitting idle at home and wanted to make use of my free time by going to work." She dropped out of school after completing Class VIII.
Health department sources said candidates attending interview for the sanitary worker post should know to read and write, and possess a minimum of one year of work experience in healthcare facilities. Among the applicants were a few sanitary workers employed under the Amma mini clinic scheme.
