Cody Gakpo has already admitted it would be an 'honour' to play for Liverpool as transfer talks advance

Cody Gakpo has already admitted it would be 'an honour' to play for Liverpool amid breaking news that the Reds are in advanced negotiations over a January move for the PSV Eindhoven and Holland star.

Reports surfaced on Monday evening that Jurgen Klopp's side had intensified talks with PSV over the festive period - so much so that they are now closing in on a deal for the highly rated forward. The ECHO understands the initial fee will be around the £37m mark with add-ons likely to take the final total well past the £40m.

Discussions have been ramped up ever since the news of Luis Diaz's extended injury prognosis was revealed and Liverpool are now looking to hijack Manchester United's move for one of the World Cup's standout players. Gakpo scored three goals in five games in Qatar, which came on the back of nine goals and 12 assists in 14 Eredivisie appearances for his club side this season.

Such form has inevitably seen the continent's leading teams circling. Speculation was rife during the World Cup break and Gakpo himself was asked about his future.

"Yeah, what you said is right," the 23-year-old told the press when asked if he is proud of being linked to Europe's top clubs. "I focus on the World Cup but it's always nice to hear such rumours. But, you know, I just try to focus here and do my best."

Of his World Cup form, Gakpo said: "I'm not surprised. I know what I'm capable of, but it's always a challenge to reach your highest level possible. I think I can improve in a lot of things."

Pressed on which clubs he would like to join during a separate interview in November, Gakpo said: "Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool. It would be an honour to play there, but I also have to see what kind of team I can best achieve my goals.”
