It's finally happening, Call of Duty gamers. CoD is getting the movie treatment.
Activision and Paramount announced on Sept. 2, 2025 that they had agreed to terms on bringing the long-running FPS franchise to the silver screen in a full-fledged movie adaptation, in what can only be described as an overdue no-brainer.
As with any video game adaptation, there is worry. How faithful will it be to the storylines from the games? Will it even try to adapt the games at all? There is no shortage of ideas from the games for the script to pull from.
The CoD movie could take place across any number of time periods. CoD began in World War II, but has since gone on to deal with just about every other era imaginable, including the Vietnam War, the Cold War, the near and distant future, and, of course, the era of Modern Warfare.
CoD works just about anywhere and any time because as long as there's a gun and some conflict, the series can work from a game standpoint. But when it comes to creating a captivating story worth telling via big-budget action sequences in a Paramount film, things get murkier.
When it comes to existing CoD storylines, the Black Ops franchise is my pick if they decide to go that route. The usage of espionage, mind control, and top-secret operations behind enemy lines is very intriguing to me.
At the same time, a Modern Warfare 2-style movie featuring a massive world war would also be exciting. Who can forget the MW2 missions featuring the Russian invasion of the US? That might translate well for the type of bombastic action the movie is looking for.
