Coach says Falcons 'have room for' 53-year-old Herschel Walker at RB

June 25--If Herschel Walker really wants to play in the NFL again, there appears to be at least one team out there willing to give him a shot.

Atlanta Coach Dan Quinn was asked Tuesday at a local business association meeting if the Falcons might have room for the 53-year-old running back, who just happened to win a Heisman Trophy at Georgia in 1982.

Quinn's answer?

"Yes," the coach told the Buckhead Business Assn. "He's one of my all-time favorite players. Yeah, we have room for him.

"For him, the legacy he left at Georgia. ... He'd definitely fit in great from a competitive standpoint."

Last week, Walker said during a radio interview that he might consider a return to the NFL, after staying in shape with MMA fighting and having recently run the 40-yard dash in 4.3 seconds.

"There is not a doubt in my mind, if I played today, I can contribute to a team," Walker said on the "Boomer Carton" radio show.

The Falcons do seem to have a void at running back, after releasing veteran Steven Jackson during the off-season. Second-year player Devonta Freeman is listed at the top of the depth chart at the position after rushing for 248 yards in 65 carries with one touchdown as Jackson's backup last season.

Whether that void can be filled by a guy who hasn't played in the NFL since 1997 is a topic that is surely being debated in Atlanta as we speak.
