Cliftonville boss Paddy McLaughlin hails 'key player' Conor McMenamin following derby win

Paddy McLaughlin celebrated North Belfast derby joy on Boxing Day.

to earn a rare festive victory against the Crues.

The Reds had won just two of the previous North Belfast league derbies - both times coming at Solitude.

Their last derby success at Seaview on Boxing Day was 10 years ago.

But this afternoon they emerged from the Shore Road venue with three points to send them top of the Danske Bank Premiership.

Their hero today was Conor McMenamin who scored the visitors' two goals, both coming after David Cushley had given the Crues the lead inside 90 seconds.

And Reds boss McLaughlin believes McMenamin has been the "key player" for his side since the former Institute manager took over at the helm.

"Conor McMenamin has been a key player for us since I took over," McLaughlin said.

"We missed him when he was out earlier in the season but he has that touch of class that not too many other players in the Irish League have."

Reflecting on their win, McLaughlin said: "We had to work really hard for our win today but we knew that would be the case."

Reds goalkeeper Richard Brush hailed the win as "massive" but insists the players won't be getting carried away.

"It's only three points. That is a massive win, and it is easy not to get carried away," he told the BBC.

"But we have a massive game against a top team this Saturday. So this is gone and we look to Saturday.

"When you look at the stats. Crusaders are a top team and won league titles in recent seasons. So we celebrated today's win.

"They might have shaded the second half and we might have caught them on the counter. It is relief considering past games and defeats.

"We sat in today but we defended so well.

"Conor looks dangerous in all areas. We try to play a lot through him to set up attacks. He isn't just a winger, but he smashes in goals as well."
