Clapton fire: Huge blaze as block of flats goes up in flames

Dozens of firefighters are battling a blaze in Hackney, east London, with dramatic pictures showing smoke billowing from a block of flats.

Around 80 firefighters were called the blaze last night.

Fire crews have rescued a woman from the first floor of the block of flats, although no-one has been injured in the inferno.

Firefighters are still fighting the flames this morning, with part of the roof of the building remaining alight.

The London Fire Brigade tweeted at 2.21am that the fire was under control, although small pockets of flames had yet to be put out.

In an earlier tweet, the service said: "Firefighters will be on scene at the Hackney fire throughout the night. Part of the roof of the building remains alight.

"Crews led one woman to safety from the first floor and there are no reports of any injuries at this stage."

A previous tweet stated: "Part of the external balcony from the ground to the fifth floor is alight.

"The Brigade's 999 Control Officers have taken 67 calls to the fire.

"The Brigade was called at 2239. Fire crews from Stoke Newington, Homerton, Bethnal Green, Islington, Holloway, Shoreditch and surrounding fire stations are at the scene.

"The cause of the fire is not known at this stage."

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called at 10.50pm on 16 September to Harry Zeital Way to reports of a fire in a block of flats.

"We dispatched an incident response officer and our hazardous area response team (HART).

"We have not treated any patients but crews remain on scene."

A picture taken at the scene shows firefighters using a huge hose in an effort to bring the blaze under control.

A police spokesman confirmed officers are at the scene, but was unable to provide further details.
