CK Deepu's death: CPM questions delay in filing police complaint

KOCHI: Even as Twenty20 leadership has been alleging that the death of the outfits’ member and dalit activist CK Deepu was a pre-planned murder executed by CPM, the party rubbished the claims as baseless.

Party sources claimed the clash in which Deepu was injured was only a ‘minor row’ that took place during the ‘lights-off’ protest and posed the question why he was not immediately shifted to hospital for treatment.

As per Nisha Aliyar of Twenty20, the ward member from Kavungaparambu, Deepu was beaten up brutally by four CPM workers. She also told the media that the attack was carried out by the CPM workers under the guidance of P V Sreenijin MLA. She said that Sreenijin was there in a neighbouring house when Deepu was attacked by CPM men.

However, Sreenijin refuted the allegations and said that he was at his residence at Elamakkara when the incident took place. “I am ready to face any probe on the issue. Investigating agencies can examine my cell phone. I want an unbiased probe into the incident which can reveal what originally happened,” Sreenijin said. “I would resort to legal recourse against Sabu M Jacob and Kizhakkambalam panchayat member Nisha Aliyar who have raised malicious allegations against me,” Sreenijin said.

CPM leadership maintains that the Saturday's attack did not lead to Deepu’s death. “So far, as we know, Deepu has been undergoing treatment for some serious illness. There had not been any physical assault on him,” said C N Mohanan, CPM district secretary.

“If he was assaulted, why did Twenty20 leadership, as well as the ward member, wait till Tuesday evening to lodge a complaint with the police? The alleged assault took place on Saturday evening,” Mohanan said.

“If CPM workers had been preventing them from hospitalizing Deepu, they could have lodged a police complaint over the phone. They could also have brought the issue to the notice of the court and the media. Why did they delay it for three days?’ Mohanan asked
