City Council issues latest update on when schools may return

Nottingham City Council says it remains in discussions with schools in the city after advising they remain closed amid the coronavirus pandemic.

On Friday, May 29, the authority's education chief said it was "too soon" for children to return to school despite the Government giving the green light for them to open from June 1.

Some primary schools across England reopened for some children from Monday and started taking in reception, Year One and Year Six pupils as well as the children of key workers.

Parents across Nottinghamshire had mixed opinions about the reopening of schools, with some saying they were apprehensive, fearful, but also willing to get back to a bit of normality.

Nursery manager Sue Goodfellow also said she wanted to quash any concerns after reopening for the first time in 10 weeks on June 1.

She said: "I think it's the right time to go back in small steps, as long as everyone does their bit, or the country is never going to get back up and running."

However, fresh fears were raised a few days ago after seven staff members at the Arboretum Primary School in the East Midlands tested positive for the covid-19 virus.

Also concerned about the safety of children and staff, councillor Neghat Khan, portfolio holder for early years, education and employment, said last week that the council is "advising schools run by the council through the Nottingham Schools Trust that they should not reopen to wider numbers at this time."

In an update on Friday, June 5, a spokesman for the council said: "The council is still in discussions with schools and hopes to have an update next week."
