Cineworld delays reopening date for its cinemas by three weeks

Cineworld has pushed back the reopening of its cinemas, blaming a delay in blockbuster releases.

The cinema chain had previously confirmed plans to reopen its branches in England on July 10, but they will now open three weeks later on July 31.

It is hoped it will also be able to reopen all its cinemas in the UK and Ireland on that date.

In a statement, the company said: "In line with recent changes to upcoming film release dates, we have made the decision to move our re-opening date to 31st July.

"We hope that we will be able to re-open the doors of all Cineworld cinemas across the UK and Ireland at that time, subject to UK government restrictions. With the on-going pandemic, this new date remains subject to final confirmation.

"We know how much you’ve been missing the cinema and we are excited to welcome you back to Cineworld soon! With great films ahead, including Mulan, Tenet, Proxima, A Quiet Place Part II, No Time To Die and many more, we can’t wait to be back."

Cineworld has branches in Greater Manchester at Didsbury, Ashton-under-Lyne, Leigh and Bolton.

Each cinema will have new safety measures in place, including socially distanced seating arrangements that allow households to sit together but away from other customers.

There will also be staggered film start times to keep customers away from one another, screens at concession stands, and hand sanitiser provided throughout.

Cineworld staff will have extra time between film screenings to clean customer spaces.

Tills will only accept contactless payments, with £45 limits for card and no limits for Apple Pay and Google Pay.

The cinema said it remains committed to being 'the best place to watch a movie'.
