Church destroyed by suspicious fire in Adelaide's south, leaving $2 million damage bill

Forty firefighters battled to control the blaze. (ABC News)

A church in Adelaide's south has been gutted by a fire investigators suspect was deliberately lit.

Fire crews and police were called to St Francis of Assisi Anglican Church on Dyson Road at Christies Beach about 12:15am.

Flames were spotted coming from the roof of the building, which was completely destroyed by the blaze.

Forty firefighters, and several Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) and Country Fire Service (CFS) vehicles attended the scene.

"No occupants were inside. Due to the intensity of the fire, a smoke advice was issued … for nearby residents to shut windows and doors," an MFS spokeswoman said.

The damage bill has been estimated at $2 million. (ABC News)

The blaze sent smoke and embers over surrounding streets, and the MFS said "aerial support appliances" were also called in to control the fire.

Fire investigators were initially unable to enter the hazardous remains of the building, but the MFS later indicated the fire was likely deliberately lit.

"Fire investigators have determined the fire as suspicious due to there being no power connected to the property," the spokeswoman said.

Investigators will return to the scene tomorrow.

Northbound traffic was blocked on Dyson Road while the Metropolitan Fire Service battled the blaze.

The MFS said the cause of the fire remained unknown but the damage bill had been estimated at $2 million.

Police have asked anyone with information on the fire to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Meanwhile, a woman was rushed to hospital overnight after she was hit by a car at Prospect.

Emergency services were called to Regency Road just after 1am.

The 46-year-old from Prospect was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
