Christopher Nkunku signing helps Graham Potter fix 14-year Chelsea striker problem

Chelsea are set to welcome Christopher Nkunku to Graham Potter's squad in the summer after the Blues made a pre-contract agreement with the RB Leipzig forward, football.london understands. An agreement for Nkunku's transfer is said to have been finalised, with Todd Boehly prepared to activate his £52million release clause.

Former Chelsea striker Timo Werner, who left the club to return to RB Leipzig last summer, has already offered some key advice to the 25-year-old ahead of his move to Stamford Bridge. The west London club sent scouts to watch the French attacker over the past couple of seasons and have been seriously impressed with what they have witnessed.

Nkunku has recently returned to training as he begins to step up his recovery from an injury suffered before the World Cup in Qatar. The 25-year-old sprained his knee during France training and was unable to feature in the tournament as Les Bleus were unable to retain their title as world champions.

Chelsea have struggled in attack this season with a number of key players misfiring in front of goals this term. Kai Havertz has scored just six goals in 27 appearances this season, whilst Deadline Day signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has managed just three goals since arriving from Barcelona in the summer.

Armando Broja is set to miss the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign through injury, whilst Raheem Sterling and Christian Pulisic have also been sidelined since the start of January. The need for a world-class finisher is stark for all to see at Stamford Bridge and Nkunku's arrival could finally fix a key problem for Potter.

Last season, the France international scored an astonishing 31 goals and also registered 20 assists in 48 appearances for Leipzig in all competitions. Nkunku is currently the top scorer in the Bundesliga this season having notched 12 goals in 15 appearances, ahead of Niklas Fulkrig (11) and Marcus Thuram (10) - with the latter having been linked with a January switch to the Blues.

The Leipzig star could add to his tally once he returns from injury as he looks to recapture his stellar form ahead of his move to west London. Chelsea have not had a Premier League golden boot winner since Didier Drogba scored 29 goals in the 2009/2010 season.

Nkunku's statistics during his time in Germany prove his arrival could spell the end of the Blues' problems in front of goal and see them compete at the top of the league again next season.
