Christmas lights switch-on event in Irvine cancelled due to Omicron fears

Irvine’s Christmas lights switch-on event planned for this Sunday has been cancelled due to the latest Covid guidance.

The Christmas extravaganza outside the Townhouse, organised by Irvine Youth Forum with help from Irvine Special Events Forum, was due to feature a Santa’s grotto, a pantomime performance and an appearance by Carmen Thomson.

Irvine Special Events Forum organiser Sylvia Mallinson told Ayrshire Live she was gutted the switch-on had to be put off.

She added: “We are obviously disappointed, but in light of the latest advice, we decided to cancel Sunday’s event.

“Our focus is on keeping everyone safe.”

Sylvia’s Break a Leg Drama pantomime, due to take place at Irvine’s Vineburgh Community Centre, has also been cancelled.

But she hopes it will be possible for the performance to take place at a later date.

She added that Irvine’s Christmas lights will be remotely turned on in due course.
