Christian Pulisic's dad 'can't stand' Jose Mourinho as former Chelsea boss tipped for USMNT role

Jose Mourinho could become the next United States of America manager if some reports are to be believed, with the former Chelsea manager, currently in charge at Roma, reportedly being eyed to replace Gregg Berhalter.

Berhalter left the role in the aftermath of the 2022 World Cup, with a public admission that he kicked his wife Rosalind in the legs during an argument in 1991. This was a claim made by the family of Borussia Dortmund's Giovani Reyna after the pair reportedly fell out during the tournament in Qatar despite the USA enjoying a successful campaign on the pitch.

One player who was a star of that tournament and will be a crucial player going forward is Christian Pulisic after an impressive tournament from the Chelsea winger. His input will be important going forward and an admission from the 24-year-old's father, reportedly saying that he 'can't stand' Mourinho, could be key in the hiring process for a new head coach.

Anthony Hudson has taken the role as USMNT head coach on an interim basis, but after two friendlies in January he said that his work was done and the search begins for a new boss. Mourinho has never taken an international job and with the USA hosting a home World Cup in 2026, the chance to manage one of the youngest and most exciting national teams in the world could be very appealing.

However, the claim made by Pulisic's father could be a stumbling block, with the winger's former coach revealing that he rejected a move to Manchester United as a 20-year old with his father taking exception to Mourinho's 'ethics.

Robin Walker coached Pulisic as a young player at Brackley Town and made the revelations, telling The Telegraph: "I'm a Chelsea fan, I grew up in London supporting them. When I was in Dortmund last year, I told him that he had to come.

"He wouldn't go to Manchester United because of Jose Mourinho. His father couldn't stand Mourinho because he didn't promote young players."

The claims linking Mourinho are limited at present, with no concrete reports, but with the Roma boss nearing the end of his contract having won every trophy on offer in the club game, the chance to win a World Cup could be appealing to the former Chelsea boss.
