Christian Doidge pens new Hibs deal as striker hands Jack Ross another boost ahead of Rangers clash

Christian Doidge says it was an easy decision to extend his deal with Hibs until the summer of 2024.

Doidge has missed a large portion of this season due to Covid-related absences and an Achilles injury and hasn't featured since August.

But he netted twice in the early part of the season, his work in attack taking plenty of credit in helping strike partner Kevin Nisbet net 18 times last term.

The Welsh striker was brought to Easter Road by Paul Heckingbottom in 2019 and has remained a key figure under Jack Ross. His contract was due to expire next summer.

Hibees head coach Ross has kept busy over the international break ahead of Sunday's League Cup semi-final with Rangers by extending the contracts of three players.

Defensive pair and 2016 Scottish Cup winners Paul Hanlon and Lewis Stevenson signed their new deals until 2024 and 2023 respectively earlier this week.

Doidge will miss out at Hampden but news of his extension comes as a big boost ahead of the semi-final showdown.

“I’m delighted,” said Doidge of his new deal. “As soon as they approached me about signing an extension it was a really easy decision to make.

“This is the club I want to play for, and I’ve enjoyed my time here more than anywhere else.

“This is a massive football club, with a really big fanbase, and the coaching staff have been brilliant with me. I’m really enjoying my football and I hope I can help the team to be successful.”

Ross added: “It was important for us to agree a new contract with Christian because we want to keep players like him at the club.

“Strikers are always going to be judged on their goal return, Christian's record in this regard has been really good. Furthermore, his all-round contribution is of great value to the team.

“Alongside his ability, he’s a good person, a strong character, and he wants to help the team move forward.”
